Otoplasty Reshapes Ears for an Improved Appearance

Oversized or misshapen ears are a common source of insecurity for children and adults alike. Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery or ear pinning, is most commonly performed on patients between the ages of four and fourteen, but the procedure is appropriate for older patients as well. Dr. Suzanne Yee performs otoplasty, as well as earlobe repair, in Little Rock to help patients who are self-conscious about their ears feel more confident in their appearance. To learn more about these ear-sculpting procedures, schedule a consultation today.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty can correct ears that are protruding, misshapen, or abnormally large. The procedure involves reshaping the ears through discreetly located incisions behind the ears and in the ear folds. In general, adult patients are provided with local anesthesia and a mild sedative, and children are administered a stronger sedative. After exposing the ear cartilage, Dr. Yee sculpts it to achieve the desired shape. The ear is repositioned, if necessary, and any excess skin is removed. After closing the incision with sutures, Dr. Yee applies protective bandages to help the ears heal in place over the following weeks. There are very few side effects associated with otoplasty, and many patients consider the procedure to be life-changing.

Earlobe Repair

Earlobes very often become subject to wear and tear from heavy, dangling earrings, and ear gauges. Over time, heavy earrings can cause the earlobe to stretch and the piercing to widen, and in some cases split the earlobe entirely. Ear gauges are worn to expand the lobe in a process called stretching, and is popular among adolescents and young adults. As the size of the gauge increases, the lobe becomes enlarged and many times the earlobe will not return to its natural shape and size after the gauge is removed. Many young adults seek gauge repairs when they feel they have outgrown the modification. Like otoplasty, earlobe repair is performed as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia. During the procedure, Dr. Yee cuts away the skin lining the tear or piercing and removes any excess tissue before suturing the lobe back together. The sutures are removed after one to two weeks, and full healing takes up to a few months.

6 year old female's parents brought her to the office of Little Rock, Arkansas cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Suzanne Yee for protruding ears. Her parents and Dr. Yee decided the best course of action would be to proceed with an otoplasty.

Risks

Cosmetic ear surgery has few risks when it is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. Potential risks include bleeding, infection, slow healing, and changes in skin sensation. With earlobe repair, a notch can be left at the bottom edge of the earlobe if the surgeon does not have the skill to avoid it. Dr. Yee has performed these procedures many times and knows how to obtain the best cosmetic result while minimizing risk.

Benefits

Otoplasty is perhaps best known as a proactive strategy to help children avoid teasing. However, there can be many different reasons for seeking cosmetic ear surgery—whether to correct a defect or injury, or simply changing the image you wish to project.

Patients who have had cosmetic ear surgery typically enjoy:

  • Improved proportion of facial features
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Minimal downtime
  • Little to no visible scarring
